Bulla Ineffabils, wood-paint, 7 x 6.50 x 2.50 m, Maria Chapel, Hoorn, Netherlands

Bulla Ineffabilis

Bulla Ineffabilis was an installation in the former Maria Chapel in Hoorn (The Netherlands). A stylised heart of seven meters high is almost stuck in the  barrel-shaped roof of Chapel. The upper half is the caricature of a sugar heart, the lower part has succumbed under the pressure of the upper part, is transformed in a puffed form and returned into a naked organic form. It has lost its bright red skin, shows a wooden skeleton and big connecting pins. The installation was developed in a 3D-programme (3D-Studio Max) and the extracted 3D-animation was part of the installation.

The Bulla Ineffabilis Deus is the popal bull (Pius IX) concerning ’the ineffabel and unlimited god’, by which the immaculate conception of Maria could be explained. The immaculateness and pureness is expressed by the upper half, that from my point of view at the same time triggers the incomprehensable unmasking and humanisation of the lower part. Heaven and earth, mind over matter?
